Belgard Construction in Day Valley, CA | Gold Star Contractors
We provide independent Belgard hardscape construction across Day Valley and Belgard service in La Selva Beach, from paver driveways and patios to retaining walls that hold back canyon slopes. The one thing that makes our Belgard work here different is that we build every project as a wildfire-defensible, slope-drained assembly, not a flat-lot paver job with a pretty top course. Day Valley’s single-lane access roads, expansive clay, and CAL FIRE wildland-urban interface rules change how a Belgard driveway or patio has to be engineered from the base up. Call (833) 382-8544 and we’ll walk your lot and talk straight about what your Belgard project actually needs.

Why Day Valley Residents Choose Us for Belgard Service
Belgard makes a deep catalog of pavers and wall block, but the product only performs as well as the base under it. We read Belgard’s installation specs and base-prep requirements the way the manufacturer writes them, because on Day Valley’s clay slopes the difference between a ten-year driveway and a two-season failure is usually what’s under the pavers, not the pavers themselves. Noel Carranza, our owner, got his start doing concrete and finish work across southern California before building Gold Star Contractors with a multi-trade crew that handles hardscape, drainage, and the fire-hardening details most paver-only outfits skip. That background matters here. When a Belgard patio in Day Valley starts to settle after a heavy winter, the problem is rarely the paver. It’s the clay, the slope, the water, or all three. We troubleshoot from the base up, not the surface down. Our team also works with genuine Belgard units and Belgard’s own edge restraints and wall components rather than mixing in unbranded pavers that won’t match color or thickness. A mismatched run on a visible driveway is a callback, and we don’t do callbacks on purpose.
We’re an independent contractor. No dealer badge, no manufacturer affiliation. Our credibility comes from hardscape we’ve built on canyon grades around Day Valley service area terrain, not from a marketing agreement. One call, done right, that’s the only way we know how to run a job.

Common Belgard Construction Problems We Solve in Day Valley
Day Valley’s climate and housing stock create specific failure patterns. Here’s what we see most often, and what’s usually going on underneath:
- Paver settlement and joint sand loss on clay. Day Valley’s expansive clay soils heave and shrink with seasonal moisture. Where a Belgard patio or driveway was laid without a deep compacted aggregate base, the surface tents after a heavy winter rain season, joints open up, and the whole thing starts moving. We pull the settled section, re-grade the clay, and re-base it properly so the movement stops.
- Edge restraint and soldier-course spread on steep driveways. On Day Valley’s steep lots, a Belgard paver driveway wants to creep downhill. If the edge restraint wasn’t anchored into the slope, the soldier course opens up, and once joints take seed and water, the creep accelerates. We anchor slope-locked edge restraints into the grade and re-lay the course so the pavers stay put through a full rainy season.
- Weston Stone wall block failing from hydrostatic pressure. A Belgard Weston Stone retaining wall terrace in Day Valley will bulge or lean when water backs up behind it. If no drainage aggregate or outlet was installed, the clay holds the water and the wall takes the pressure. We rebuild with proper drainage so the wall drains before it fails.
- Combustible edging and open wall cores against the house. This is a fire-hardening issue more than an aesthetic one. Where combustible edging, wood-to-paver transitions, or open wall cores sit against the house or under a deck, embers can lodge and hold heat. The hardscape gets replaced, but the fire detail doesn’t. We correct those details as part of the build, because in Day Valley the hardscape is part of the defensible-space envelope.
- Driveway approaches that double as fire-engine turnarounds. Many 1950s-1970s redwood homes on unincorporated lots were built before modern fire access standards. A crushed, heaved driveway isn’t just an eyesore; it can be the lack of a fire-engine turnaround the lot never had. We’ve rebuilt Belgard paver approaches that solve both problems at once.
Belgard Service in Day Valley: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Day Valley is an unincorporated, fire-prone rural canyon community in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and nearly every construction project here is really a wildfire-hardening and defensible-space project. Getting anything permitted means going through Santa Cruz County plus CAL FIRE’s wildland-urban interface requirements, not a city building department. That changes what a Belgard paver driveway or patio has to be. The roof needs Class A rating, the vents need ember resistance, the siding needs fire resistance, and the hardscape at grade has to contribute to the fire story rather than fight it. We routinely specify Belgard pavers and wall systems that sit under a Class A roof, away from combustible transitions, with core and edge details that don’t trap embers. Up off the ridge roads in Day Valley our crew rebuilt a Belgard paver driveway approach for a 1960s redwood ranch home where the old asphalt had cracked and heaved after a wet winter, and the homeowner’s insurer wanted the ignition path to the house closed off. We pulled the failed section down to grade, put in a deeper compacted base over the clay, set Belgard Dublin Cobble on a slope-locked edge restraint, and ran drainage out to daylight so the next rainy season doesn’t undo it. The finished drive also doubles as the fire-engine turnaround the lot never had.
Belgard Models & Products We Service in Day Valley
We work across the Belgard lines that hold up best on Day Valley’s terrain. Belgard Mega-Arbel slab pavers make sense for large-format patios and driveway aprons where a clean, monolithic look works with the house. Belgard Catalina Grana pavers, tumbled and warmer, are common on mountain patios where the finish wants to feel settled into the landscape. Belgard Dublin Cobble handles small-format driveway and walkway work well on grades, especially where the pattern needs to lock edge-to-edge. And Belgard Weston Stone retaining wall block handles slope terracing when the drainage is done right behind the wall. For parts and components, we buy genuine Belgard units and Belgard’s own edge restraints and wall components rather than mixing in unbranded pavers that won’t match color or thickness. A mismatched run on a visible driveway is a callback. For Belgard sales & service across these lines, we stock common units locally and order the rest for fast Day Valley turnaround.

AfterBelgard Service Pricing in Day Valley
Day Valley’s canyon access and slope work affect pricing. Haul road restrictions, pallet staging, deeper base excavation on clay, and drainage integration all add cost that a flat lot in town wouldn’t carry. Here’s what Belgard hardscape projects typically run in this area:
| Service | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Paver Driveway Installation | $7,000 – $18,000 |
| Paver Patio Installation | $3,500 – $11,000 |
| Driveway Replacement | $5,000 – $14,000 |
What drives the cost is base depth, slope stabilization, drainage runs, fire-defensible details, and the specific Belgard line you choose, whether in Day Valley or with our Belgard service in Rio Del Mar. Our free estimates include a written line-item quote, and we’ll tell you if a repair makes more sense than a full replacement. Call (833) 382-8544 to set one up.

FAQs – Belgard Construction in Day Valley
Yes, if the base and edge restraint are engineered for slope. We excavate deeper on the uphill side, compact the aggregate base in lifts, and anchor a slope-locked edge restraint into the grade so the soldier course can’t creep downhill. The pavers themselves don’t slide; the base and edges fail when the slope wasn’t designed for. Call (833) 382-8544 for a slope assessment and line-item estimate.
In most cases, yes. Day Valley is unincorporated Santa Cruz County, so hardscape over a certain square footage, retaining walls over a certain height, and any work in the wildland-urban interface can trigger county review and CAL FIRE defensible-space conditions. We handle the permit path and know what the reviewers look for. Call (833) 382-8544 and we’ll tell you what your specific project triggers before you spend money.
You don’t. We do, and we plan it before the first load comes up the canyon. Day Valley’s access roads are single-lane with hauling restrictions, so the paver quantity, pallet staging, and truck size have to be worked out in advance. That’s why we pre-plan the paver quantity and stage pallets where the access allows, then move material to the work area with a short-bed truck or conveyor. It’s slower than a flat-lot drop, but it’s the only way to get the material up without blocking the road.
Mega-Arbel slab pavers and Dublin Cobble both work well, paired with noncombustible edge details and no wood-to-paver transitions against the house. The paver surface itself is noncombustible; what matters for fire is what’s under, around, and against it. We spec the paver and the fire details together so the driveway or patio contributes to defensible space rather than creating an ember trap.
If the settlement is localized to one panel and the base is still sound, we lift and re-base the affected section and it’s done. If the failure traces back to a bad base or the slope, patching pavers over a bad base just postpones the same failure a season. We’ll tell you which one you have after we open it up. Call (833) 382-8544 and we’ll assess it for free.
